Four Northeastern Arkansas Towns Approve Sales Tax Hikes in Special Elections

Yesterday, voters in Bay, Bono, Brookland, and Wynne all approved municipal sales tax increases to fund street and sewer projects.

Here's a brief recap of each town's vote:

  • Bay (in Craighead County; population 1,800): Citizens voted 75-6 for a one-cent sales tax to help offset the rising cost of asphalt. The new revenue will allow more repairs to city roads.
  • Bono (in Craighead County; population 1,512): In a race with 4.3% voter turnout, one vote made the difference as a one-cent sales tax passed by a 33-32 margin. The tax increase will help to fund the city's roads.
  • Brookland (in Craighead County; population 1,332): The one-cent sales tax measure passed by a 53-6 margin. The town's roads have been damaged by heavy cement trucks, according to Mayor Kenneth Jones, and the $63,000 annual tax revenue will repair streets and drainage.
  • Wynne (in Cross County; population 8,615): Voters passed a one-cent sales tax by a 561-285 (66.3%-33.7%) vote. The tax will generate about $1.4 million annually, with the money going to repair streets, improve parks, and develop economic opportunities.
